Caring for Sore Feet – bunions, corns, calluses, plantar fascia

Sore and painful feet can ruin your day.  It’s no fun when you have to put up with pain all day as you try and work through it when you don’t know how to fix it.

When we look at the general population, women are the ones who have the most problems with their feet.  It is amazing what they will do to satisfy the great god of fashion.  All those high heeled, pointy toed footware are prescriptions for disaster as far as your feet are concerned.  Although the array connected to foot pain are widespread… there is good news… most causes of foot pain are both treatable and preventable.

Let’s gulp down a soupcon of the more common worldwide foot ailments and how to handle them.  Be aware that these are only the most common foot pains.  It would take a much longer article or articles to cover them all.

Bunions

A bunion is not just a bump on your foot.  Bunion is derived from the latin word bunio or turnip.  How we got from Turnips to bumps on feet is a problem best left to etymologists.  But we digress.  Bunions (hallux vaigus) occur when the joint of the big toe leans in towards the second toe.  Your foot type determines whether you get bunions or not.  So if you have a certain foot type you will be prone to develop a bunion.  It’s in your DNA.  Short of surgery, you may seek relief with supports, padding, medications and shoe inserts.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are another painful occurrence of the feet.  They usually cocur because of improper trimming of the toenail so that the toenail actually cuts into the skin.  The toenail should be cut stright across and carefully trimmed around the edges.  The proper toenail cutter helps.

Callus

Repeated rubbing aginst something, usually a shoe, causes a callus.  This rubbing makes the skin protect itself by building uop a protectivelayer of skin (a callus). Some calluses can become painful.  Calluses usually occur on the bottom of the foot and are pretty prevalent in athletics. They are not very glamorous and should be eliminated for if not taken care of they can limit your locomotion and hazard your bustle.

Corns

Acorn is a circular thickened lesion in the skin of the foot.  They usually occur on the top of your foot or toe.  It occurs because of pressure or friction such as rubbing against a part of your shoe.  It is different from a callus because it has a central core of hard material.  If the undrlying cause is not removed, then the corn will return if it has been treated and removed.

Arch and Heel Pain

If you have pain across the bottom of your foot extending from the ball of the foot and the heel, this is knows as arch pain.  The foot contains 24 bones.  These bones form two arches, Heel and arch pain is generally known as plantar fascitis. The muscles of the foot along with a tough, sinewy tissue known as the plantar facia provides support to the arches of the foot. When this fibrous sheath is damaged there is an inflammatory response.

When this tissue becomes stressed or even torn, inflammation and pain (even severe) will occur. Artrch pain in the morning is owing to the plantar fascia becoming contraced and tight as you sleep so that when you awake and walk in the morning, the fascia is still tight and prone to irritation when stretched.  This can also occur when waling or standing for long periods of time.  The result is that the plantar fascia becomes painful and inflamed.  Simple stretching exercises accompaned by contrasting baths will alleviate some of the symptoms. If it does not respond to home care and becomes chronic as many untreated pain do, a doctor should be consulted.

Properly fitted shoes will usually solve most of these foot problems.   Grant your feet the range that they require, dodge the  protracted usage of high heels and pointy toes. Observe good nail regimen and hygiene and chances are you’ll keep your feet comfortable and free from pain.  That’s what you really want, isn’t it?
